Do You Have to Count Calories Forever?
No. You do not have to count calories forever. You do not even have to count them now.
Tracking just makes the whole thing easier, because you do not have to think about it so much.
Tracking is not the stressful part
I get it. A lot of people hear "count calories" and picture something mentally exhausting. To me it is the opposite. It sets you free.
If you are going off vibes and eyeballing portions, you do not actually know what you are eating. Then when the scale moves the wrong way, you have no idea why. That is the stressful version.
How I would do it
- Track precisely for a couple of weeks at a time, several times a year. That is enough to calibrate yourself.
- Get over the fear of it first. I would rather you track long enough to get comfortable and see what it teaches you: how foods affect you, and how much you can realistically eat in the calorie budget you have.
- When you have a specific goal, track.
- At maintenance, you do not have to. Go by portions, and keep an eye on the scale to make sure you stay in a range you are happy with.
