How Many Steps a Day Should You Aim For?

By Ward Stanford · · 3 min read

Seven thousand steps is the bare minimum for health. The real answer is "that, plus more."

There is no downside to more

More steps, more cardio and more movement are all fine, as long as you can recover from them and they are not wrecking your sleep or your stress.

What I use for fat loss

For people in a weight loss phase, I aim for an average of 10,000 to 12,000 steps a day.

If your appetite is the problem

If you struggle with appetite control, keep going up from there. There is good data that the more steps you take, the better your appetite is controlled. For someone who is hungry all the time while dieting, 15,000 steps or more can be a huge help.

The short version

  • 7,000 steps: the minimum for health.
  • 10,000 to 12,000: a solid target for general maintenance of your body composition and for fat loss.
  • 15,000 plus: worth trying if hunger is your main battle.
