Is It Harder to Lose Weight After 40?

By Ward Stanford · · 4 min read

I am going to go against the grain on this one. No, it is not harder to lose weight after 40.

What is actually happening

It is harder to get in shape when you have let yourself get out of shape. A lot of people start at 40 or older because they drifted, not because a clock struck midnight on their birthday.

Yes, recovery is different. But look at why. People in their 40s tend to have more stress, busier jobs, kids, families, bills. All of that eats away at how well you can train, eat, sleep and recover. It is your life piling up. It is not a switch that gets flipped at 40.

So look at it the same way you would at 22, with fewer recovery resources.

What does change

There are some hormonal changes, but they do not change the rules of thermodynamics. Here is what I would do:

  • Get blood work done. Check that your thyroid and your sex hormones are in good shape.
  • Eat mostly whole foods and fuel your training properly.
  • Work on recovery. Improve your sleep and improve your inflammatory markers.

You will find that a lot of the "age related" issues go away.

Your program matters more now

When you are young, you have recovery to spare, and a bad program does not hurt you. You can bounce back from almost anything.

With fewer recovery resources, a bad program gets exposed. You end up with connective tissue and joint issues, soreness that drags into systemic fatigue, and no motivation because everything aches. You also end up training tired, which means worse sessions, more mistakes and more dragging through workouts.

That is not because you are 42. It is a bad program on top of bad recovery, without enough food or sleep to back it up. Fix those, and you are in a much better place than you think.
