Is Walking Enough to Lose Weight?

By Ward Stanford · · 3 min read

Honestly, it is a poorly phrased question, because the answer is always "it depends." But in the spirit of what you are asking: no, not by itself.

And that is true of any single type of exercise. Walking is not the problem. Starting with exercise is.

Start with the food

Most of the time when we say weight loss, we really mean fat loss. The best way to get there is a calorie deficit, and the biggest lever for that is your eating pattern.

So the first question is not "what exercise should I do?" It is "how do I need to change what I eat so I am in a calorie deficit?" That is what drives the result.

Then pick the movement that supports it

Once the food is moving the right way, ask a second question: what movement and training fits my body composition goals, my schedule, the things I actually enjoy, and my recovery?

Now ask whether walking is enough to support your weight loss with a calorie deficit in place. Yes. Absolutely.

How many steps?

  • 7,000 to 8,000 steps a day is a good bare minimum for health and daily activity.
  • Ramping up to 10,000 to 12,000 steps a day supports your metabolism, burns some extra calories and helps your health, and it is very doable.

Walking is easy to recover from, easy to repeat and easy to build a habit around. It is a great partner to a deficit. It just should not be the whole plan.
