Should You Lift or Do Cardio to Lose Fat?

By Ward Stanford · · 3 min read

Both. But that is still the wrong question to ask first.

The question to start with

Ask this instead: how do I create a calorie deficit so I can lose body fat?

The first lever is always nutrition. It is the most important, the easiest and the best. The other 23 hours of your day matter more than the one hour you train. Every time.

Then the order goes like this

  • Nutrition creates the deficit. That is where the fat loss comes from.
  • Cardio supports it. It burns calories, helps your heart, and supports the hormonal processes that free up fatty acids and move them out to be burned.
  • Resistance training protects your muscle. Once you are in a deficit, lifting is the main signal telling your body to keep its lean mass.

More is better, within reason

The more cardio and the more resistance training you can do during a deficit, the better your body composition and the way you look and feel. Just get the order right: food first, then cardio, then lifting to keep the muscle on.
